A Brief Introduction to Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios used to be a fishing town without much action. Fast forward to now, and it’s one of Jamaica’s most coveted destinations for its pristine beaches, natural beauty (waterfalls, anyone?), and ample opportunities to adventure through nature. Think scuba diving, rafting, and waterfall traversing. The exploration vibes are always high in Ocho Rios!

A port town, Ocho Rios, is a common stop for Caribbean cruise ships and has a population of about 16,000 people. Even Martin Luther King stayed in this magical town to write his final book — an event that put Ocho Rios on the map for many travelers.

Things to Do in Ocho Rios

Whether you want to relax and enjoy the scenery or dive headfirst into extreme sports and adventure, the island village of Ocho Rios has something for everyone.

1. Visit Bamboo Blu Beach

  • Location: Mammee Bay Rd, Jamaica

Out of all the fun things to do in Ocho Rios, the nearby beaches take the cake for a tied sense of wonder and relaxation. Let the sand crinkle under your toes as the sights of the horizon, colored by turquoise waters, takes you away from your busy day to day life, if only for a few moments.

Bamboo Blu Beach is an exclusive, private beach accessible only to travelers in Mammee Bay, where our luxurious Villa Paradiso is located. Here, you can enjoy fewer crowds and unwind with an on-beach massage. Or, you could sit back with a few margaritas at the on-site Bamboo Blu restaurant and delight in a tantalizing Jerk Chicken meal.

2. Relish Nature’s Wonders at the Blue Hole

  • Location: Lodge, Jamaica

The Blue Hole in Jamaica is nestled at the foot of Jamaica’s tropical mountains. It’s technically a sinkhole within natural limestone, but don’t worry — this gorgeous colored lagoon is shallow enough to walk through and float on, even if you’re traveling with children!

Any thrillseekers in the house? This is a great spot for cliff diving, with two dive spots among the cliffs. The dreamy Blue Hole is a must-see for anyone staying near Ocho Rios, as it’s a convenient 15-minute drive away.

Wondering what other nature activities you can enjoy in Ocho Rios? Our guests also enjoy visits to Dolphin Cove and the green grotto caves, Mystic Mountain, and activities like ziplining, snorkeling, catamaran tours, white river tubing, and plenty more activities on our adventure page!

3. Visit Bob Marley’s Nine Mile

  • Location: Nine Mile, Jamaica

History buffs, reggae enthusiasts, and anyone else who enjoyed a Bob Marley song or two will enjoy this historical attraction. Rastafarian guides will take you to Mount Zion, a place for meditation for Marley that is so often referenced in his music. They’ll also show you around his childhood home. We love the skillfully painted murals all over the building, showing saturated and striking images of Bob Marley in beautiful artwork.

Take in the gorgeous surroundings of tropical trees and flora — this place has been well-maintained to preserve the serenity people feel when they listen to Marley’s music.

Best Time to Visit Ocho Rios

Your town’s Winter is Ocho Rios’s most balanced time of the year. Between December and March, you’ll experience long, sunny days, gentle waters, and warm, 80s temperature averages to feel like you’re on vacation without the excessive sweat of the summer months.

Here’s some more information about times to visit Ocho Rios:

  • Winter: This is the best time to visit because the weather is warm and sunny without feeling excessive.
  • Spring: Between March and June, temperatures get slightly warmer and can hit the late-80s. We still welcome travelers at this time but just know it’s a little warmer and toward the tail end of peak season.
  • Summer: This is the hottest time of year in Ocho Rios, with July in particular being scorching hot and with more rain. However, you’ll benefit from fewer crowds during this off-peak time.
  • Fall: The rainy season tends to extend to fall, which might limit some of your adventurous activities. However, this pre-peak time of year begins to welcome the city’s best weather around November.

Best Restaurants in Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios gives you a culinary variety that is surprising for such a small port town. Of course, we’d implore you to enjoy traditional Jamaican dishes like curry goat, pepper pot soup, ackee and saltfish, and flaky, juicy Jamaican patties. But you’ll also find abundant restaurants with international cuisine if you’re craving something from home.

Here are some of the best restaurants in Ocho Rios:

  • Lobster Dave Seafood Restaurant
  • Passage to India
  • Reggae Hill
  • Juici Patties
  • Bamboo Blu
  • Mongoose Restaurant

But if you want something custom? Take advantage of Villa Paradiso’s on-site chef, who can cook a curated meal for a romantic evening, dinner party, and everything in between!

Bonus Travel Tips for Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios is one of Jamaica’s gorgeous and well-maintained jewels that’s a pleasure for any traveler to experience. But to make the most of your vacation, consider these last-minute travel tips.

  • Pack bug spray: Mosquito bites can really hamper your vacation if you’re scratching at all hours, right? Feel at ease and bring bug repellent for those high-peak mosquito times like dusk.
  • Don’t worry about rental cars: This is your vacation — the last thing you want is to drive up to Ocho Rios’s natural wonders just to get lost in the many winding roads or have your car break down. Take advantage of local tours, and remember, a booking with Villa Paradiso includes your own personal driver and airport pickup!
  • Choose a luxurious accommodation: You only live once, right? What better way to soak up the natural beauty of an Ocho Rios sunset and horizon than on an al fresco outdoor sanctuary, complete with comfortable couches and a pool to boot!
